Happy Friday!
(Weekend means 2 days in a row with no home school!)
Today I am feeling a lot of gratitude for my community. The picture above is once again beer from our local brewery, and take out is becoming a Friday night tradition. They are giving away free meals for kids and offer a sliding scale, pay nothing, or pay it forward system. Today they said their "pay it forward" fund was overflowing. I love our little community. I've always joked that, when the apocalypse does come, we live in a really good part of the world to weather it. In fact, do you remember in the zombie movie, "I am Legend", where the survivor colony is? That's right, it's in Vermont.
And there's a good reason! With small, tight knit communities and lots of space (and good cheese and beer!) we are in a pretty good place to withstand these kinds of events. ...
I went the whole day without looking at the news. Met with my department via google at 9am, and it was really great to see their faces. Then I cranked through a bunch of work while Mike did the homeschooling until almost 1, and then we all got out on a nice walk and bike ride in the sunshine for a few hours. We did a porch visit with grandma (Mike's mom), where stays on her porch and we stay in the yard. Then a walk to the pump track, which is also bordered by the high school athletic fields. I got to have a couple of 10-feet-away conversations in the sunshine with good friend.

One friend in particular shared how wonderful this time at home with her daughter has been. This pace, she said, away from the frenzy of school day routines, is actually really joyful and fun. It was refreshing to hear that perspective, and think about what I can learn by slowing down with this time with family, and not just focusing on the struggle. It was a really nice and relaxing afternoon.
But S is now coughing. He doesn't seem that sick: his fever has mostly broken, he is eating and has energy, and his headache seems to be mostly gone. But he has started coughing, and I still wonder if he may have Covid. The doctor refuses to test him because he isn't "high risk", and it is true that he isn't that sick. I guess at this point, all we can do is wait. Wait and see how his symptoms progress, and wait and see if anyone else in the family gets it. Tonight his fever was 100 and his cough came back especially around bedtime. We will continue to isolate and stay at home, other than bike rides, walks, and getting groceries. We heard on the news tonight that the rules are changing, and now they DO want to test people with mild symptoms to start identifying (and therefore isolating) as many cases as possible. This makes total sense, and so I may call the doctor back on Monday asking for a test. Wish us luck!
